IMPORTANT PARENT/TEEN REQUIREMENTS
- Commitment - In Hawaii, Drivers education is a legal process for teens (under 18 yrs old) to obtain a driver’s license. You need to be 100% committed to this program. If you are committed to other sports, job, trips, or any activities that will prevent you from committing to the dates and times of the program, DO NOT SIGN UP. Please check with your coach, job, or parents to make sure this course is your priority. Any classes missed can't be made up in the session and will need to wait to complete in the next session prolonging your completion. Any BTW (behind-the-wheel) missed can be made up, but upon instructors availability only. If any of your other commitments will interfere with drivers ed, inquire about a later session dates that would fit you better. From the first classroom to the last behind the wheel session, the program will normally complete in 6-8 weeks. State of Hawaii law states that the program, which includes 30 hours (minimum) of classroom and 6 hours of BTW (behind-the-wheel) instruction, cannot be completed in less than 6 weeks. Teens (15 1/2–17 years old) must obtain a learner’s permit before the start of their enrolled session, which is required for BTW instructions.
- Classroom- This class will be taught in-person (unless otherwise noted). Class tardiness will not be accepted and the student will not be allowed in the class when they show up, emphasizing the importance of being on time and ready. The class scheduled will be sent to teen/parent prior to them signing up & committing to the session to see if it works for them. Weekly class quizzes will be given at the end of each chapter and must pass with 80% or higher. Final test will need to be 80% higher to receive their Classroom certificate.
- BTW - During parent meeting, students will be asked to choose their desire drive day/time slot. Drive time selection choice will be based in order of who signed up for the class first. We do behind the wheel instruction in pairs, you need to be available to 6 time slots on a regular weekly basis on the weekends ( sometimes on weekdays). Behind-The-Wheel training typically begins and ends at a Lihue or Waimea location. Students must be able demonstrate all aspects of vehicle control, the ability to complete basic driving skills, and show safe and lawful driving to receive a their Behind the Wheel certificate.
- Hour log - A written practice driving log listing a description of a minimum of 40 hours of daytime and 10 hours of night time practice driving must be completed. A blank fillable driving log will be provided online for your teen. When completed, the log must be notarized and turned in to the instructor in exchange for the behind-the-wheel completion certificate. This is the final step before taking a road test. Again, to receive this certificate, one parent will need to notarize the practice driving log and turn it into the driving school on final exam day (preferably). This certificate along with the classroom completion certificate will need to presented to the examiner (DMV) at the time of the road test.
- A mandatory parent meeting will be conducted prior to the start of the session that will explain other details and requirements of this program
